The first photos are out for “Macbeth” and “Assassin’s Creed” director Justin Kurzel’s historical drama film “True History of the Kelly Gang” which premieres at the Toronto Film Festival in coming weeks.
George MacKay (“Pride,” “How I Live Now”) will portray notorious Australian bushranger Ned Kelly who died at the age of 25 in 1880 following a shootout with Australian police in the movie which is based on Peter Carey’s Booker Prize-winning novel.
Russell Crowe, Charlie Hunnam, Nicholas Hoult, Essie Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Dacre Montgomery, Sean Keenan, Claudia Karvan, Harry Greenwood, and Markella Kavenagh co-star in the film which is said to be ‘unsentimental, brutal, raw and visceral’. Kurzel helms from a script by Shaun Grant.
The Ned Kelly story has been adapted for the screen several times before, notably the 1970 film starring Mick Jagger, and Gregor Jordan’s 2003 film starring Heath Ledger, Orlando Bloom, Naomi Watts and Geoffrey Rush.
