Zwick, Maguire Make A “Pawn Sacrifice”

“The Last Samurai” and “Love and Other Drugs” director Ed Zwick is ditching his “The Great Wall” project for now in favour of the chess drama “Pawn Sacrifice” reports Variety.

Tobey Maguire will both produce the film and star as troubled and famed Cold War-era chess wiz prodigy Bobby Fischer. Fischer captured the world’s imagination when he won the World Chess Championship over Russian Boris Spassky.

Battling his own inner demons, he ultimately lived in exile in Iceland where he died. The role of Spassky is currently being cast.

Steven Knight wrote the script while Gail Katz is also producing. Zwick replaces David Fincher who originally developed the film to direct.
