Overcoming some lackluster trailers, Disney Animation’s “Zootopia” has proven a smash with both critics and at the box-office. The animated tale, about a rabbit police officer and a sly fox overcoming prejudice, is on target to pull in $70 million for the weekend.
That would be a new record for biggest non-Pixar Disney debut weekend, topping the company’s last effort – 2014’s “Big Hero 6” with $56 million. Reviews have also been excellent with a 77/100 on Metacritic, making it the second best reviewed wide release of the year thus far behind only “The Witch”.
The Gerard Butler-led action sequel “London Has Fallen” is looking to finish the weekend in second place with a projected $21 million, behind the $30.4 million opening that its predecessor “Olympus Has Fallen” scored in 2013. Reviews were absolutely scathing (28/100 on MC).
“Deadpool” will drop to third place with an expected three-day take of $16 million and should cross the $300 million domestic total gross by the end of the weekend. Tina Fey’s war-time comedy “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” is dead on arrival, pulling in decidedly mixed reviews (55/100 on MC) and heading to a fourth place and $7 million opening.
