Sony’s zombie skull crushing sequel “Zombieland: Double Tap” has launched with $2.9 million in Thursday night previews in North America, beating out the Angelina Jolie-led “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” with $2.3 million.
“Zombieland” marks the first major studio comedy since “Good Boys” to open and is expected to have a debut weekend akin to the original film’s $24 million launch – not bad for a film with a tight $42 million production budget.
“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is expected to beat it with a forecast to open around $45 million this weekend, notably behind the $69 million debut of the first film in 2014. The film is also opening this weekend in all major international markets.
The third weekend of “Joker” is also expected to do well as the film has managed to pull in $213 million in North America in less than two weeks.
