The Walt Disney Co. has scrapped filmmaker Robert Zemeckis’ planned next project for the studio – the CG animated mo-cap remake of the classic Beatles film “Yellow Submarine” says Heat Vision.
Zemeckis first set up the project in mid-2009 and early last year it was revealed that Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell would play the Fab Four in the film via mo-cap technology that Zemeckis employed in the likes of “Beowulf” and “A Christmas Carol”. The plan was also to use sixteen Beatles songs and they have secured the cooperation of Apple Corps.
The project has hit a number of roadblocks in recent months from budget issues and delays, to the downturn in box-office for mo-cap films. The news has been hammered home by this past weekend’s disastrous opening for the Zemeckis-produced $150 million-budget “Mars Needs Moms!”. Zemeckis is likely to segue to a new live-action project while he’ll likely try finding a new home for ‘Submarine’.
