“300” and “Watchmen” director Zack Snyder has signed on to direct the Afghanistan-set drama “The Last Photograph” at Warner Brothers and Hollywood Gang productions. The story revolves around a photograph that becomes the catalyst for a journey two men undertake through war-torn Afghanistan reports Variety.
At last report Christian Bale is attached to play a war correspondent who is the only survivor of an attack on a group of Americans. Sean Penn would play a retired ex-special ops soldier determined to free a family member who has been kidnapped and the journalist agrees to travel the rough terrain to find them with him in exchange for the story.
Kurt Johnstad (“300”) penned the script based on an idea by Snyder who has been developing the project for four years. Snyder was originally only slated to produce alongside his wife Deborah Snyder and Gianni Nunnari. Both Sergey Bodrov (“Mongol”), and Niels Arden Oplev (the Swedish language “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”) were previously linked as directors.
Now it would appear Snyder himself will take the helm once he wraps “Man of Steel”, which would mean shooting will likely take place later than originally planned and calls into question both Bale and Penn’s involvement.
