Bad Robot’s upcoming live-action remake of Makoto Shinkai’s 2017 acclaimed anime feature “Your Name” will reportedly be Americanised at the same time.
“Arrival” and “Bird Box” writer Eric Heisserer is attached to the property and confirms the new take will be approached from a western viewpoint, however he tells Slashfilm the reasons for that aren’t Hollywood cynicism but a deliberate request of the original’s rights holders:
“You have to find the best iteration of that story based on the fact that they want an American live-action version of the film. They stated if they wanted a Japanese live-action version, they would just do it themselves. But they want to see it through the lens of a western viewpoint.”
Heisserer also says he’s very deliberately not going to be repeating the scenario that happened with the “Ghost in the Shell” remake with its controversies over cultural appropriation.
No word as yet regarding when the new film will go into production.
