At a press event for “2012” this past weekend in Colorado, director Roland Emmerich was asked why no sequel has been done to his 1996 megahit “Independence Day”.
Emmerich tells Latino Review that a story has already been planned, “a very really good great story, a very cool one”. So what’s been holding things up? Will Smith’s paycheck of all things.
Emmerich says he and Producer Dean Devlin are still keen to make the sequel and the first film’s breakout star Will Smith also “wants to do it in some sort of a package they [20th Century Fox] can live with.”
Smith’s fee (which gives him a percentage of the film’s gross) however has Fox wanting to do the film without the costly yet profitable superstar, but Emmerich is adamant that “Will is essential for us, for this movie and actually for the audience too.”
The inevitable result? “it’s in limbo and lately the studios are fighting… we’ll see what happens. I would love to do it.”
