Nick Yarborough (“Letters from Rosemary Kennedy”) has been set to pen a prequel to Antoine Fuqua’s 2001 crime drama “Training Day” which starred Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke.
Collider broke the news, saying the story will be set nearly a decade earlier in late April of 1992 – two days before the Rodney King verdict was delivered (leading to the L.A. riots) and a time when Los Angeles is a powder keg just waiting to explode.
The prequel will follow a mid-30s version of Washington’s Alonzo Harris and the project is still in the very early stages so no director is attached yet. The site suggests Denzel’s son, “BlacKKKlansman” and “Tenet” star John David Washington, would be a good fit.
David Ayer helmed the first film which went on to gross more than $100 million worldwide.
