Filmmaker Soenke Wortmann (“The Miracle of Bern”) will direct the big screen adaptation of Donna Woolfolk Cross’ 1997 medieval drama “Pope Joan” reports Variety.
The story recounts the ninth-century legend of a woman, disguised as a man, who ascends the papal throne. Shooting starts early next year with Franka Potente set to star.
Director Volker Schloendorff was fired from the Constantin Film project in July, six weeks before filming was due to start, due to comments about the German film industry.
Similarly a May shoot in Bulgaria was postponed after actor John Goodman’s sudden exit for which an outstanding lawsuit is still being decided.
