Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona (“The Impossible,” “The Orphanage”) signed on to direct the “World War Z” sequel back in December, but now it looks the project has been pushed back a bit so that Bayona can get to work on another project.
In an official press release today, Bayona is confirmed to be first directing “A Monster Calls,” an adaptation of Patrick Ness’ award-winning children’s fantasy novel, for River Road Entertainment, Participant Media, Lionsgate International, and Focus Features.
This “visually spectacular drama” follows a young boy who attempts to deal with his mother’s illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales.
Ness is adapting the screenplay from his novel. Belén Atienza will produce with a Fall 2016 release planned.
