In March came the news that legendary “In the Mood for Love,” “Chungking Express” and “Happy Together” director Wong Kar-wai was working on a new film titled “Blossoms” based on author Jin Yucheng’s 2012 novel of the same name.
The story follows a young entrepreneur attempting to find wealth and romance during the 1990s economic boom in Shanghai. No schedule for the project was revealed at the time but it is said to be the third part of his informal trilogy that began with ‘Mood’ and continued with “2046” (though apparently doesn’t include his earlier effort “Days of Being Wild”).
Now, Variety reports the film is being delayed as Wong will craft a tie-in web series first with production company Tencent. Said series he says will be “completely different” than his film but has to be produced first. Then comes the film with Wong still expecting to direct.
Production is set to begin next year on location in Shanghai and though casting has already been completed, details have yet to be announced. Wong’s name is still attached to the web series “Paradise Guesthouse”. He was previously attached to Amazon’s “Tong Wars” series but that project has now been dropped.
