MGM is closing a deal with Reese Witherspoon to reprise her role as Elle Woods in a third film in the “Legally Blonde” comedy series which is being assembled rapidly.
Kirsten ‘Kiwi’ Smith and Karen McCullah, who adapted the Amanda Brown novel for the 2001 first film, are in final talks to write the script and will get to work on it immediately.
Original producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel are returning to produce and will be joined by Witherspoon. A director will be secured in short order.
The original 2001 film grossed $141 million worldwide on an $18 million budget and continues to be a staple for audiences, also being turned into a hit stage musical that continues to tour.
