“Drive” and “Only God Forgives” director Nicolas Winding Refn is set to co-direct and executive produce an HBO TV series adaptation of the cult film franchise “Maniac Cop”.
Set in Los Angeles, the story unfolds through a kaleidoscope of characters ranging from cop to criminal. A killer in uniform has uncaged mayhem upon the streets, paranoia leads to social disorder as a city wrestles with the mystery of a brutal exterminator in blue. Is he mere mortal, or a supernatural force?
The project hails from Refn’s NWR Originals and is being created in partnership with HBO and Canal Plus. Refn will serve as showrunner and will direct the entire series with John Hyams (“Universal Soldier: Regeneration”) and calls the project “an unadulterated, action-packed horror odyssey” along with being a “strong commentary on the decline of civilization”.
Refn and Hyams will both executive produce with Nick Hall, Lene Borglum, Frederic Fiore, Alex Gayner, Efe Cakarel, and original “Maniac Cop” trilogy director William Lustig.
