Long-time “X-Men” franchise star Hugh Jackman is saying farewell to his iconic role in the upcoming James Mangold-directed third standalone “Wolverine” film. However, it now sounds like the film could also serve as the springpad for his potential successor.
SuperHeroHype reports that sources tell them that film will introduce X-23 to the “X-Men” films and she’ll join Jackman’s Wolverine & Patrick Stewart’s Professor X in the new adventure. This gels with a recent stand-in casting call seeking women “specifically at a height of 4′-4’11” and size 0-4 with dark brown hair.”
In the comics, X-23 (aka Laura Kinney) is the first successful clone of the mutant Wolverine – possessing his superhuman strength, enhanced reflexes, heightened agility, and an accelerated healing factor. However , she only has two claws on each hand and one that protrudes from each of her feet.
Mangold returns to direct with a script from David James Kelly. Boyd Holbrook is also onboard as the film’s villain and production is expected to kick off next month.
In related news, “Game of Thrones” actress Maisie Williams has responded to rumors that she’s up for the role of Wolfsbane in Josh Boone’s “New Mutants” spin-off. She tells EW: “I can’t say much about it at all, but I would absolutely love to be a part of it, [and] to be a part of the Marvel family.”
