Will Smith Will NOT Be In ID4 Sequels

Director Roland Emmerich and co-writer and producer Dean Devlin have previously indicated they’ve been prepping two versions of the sequel to the 1996 smash hit “Independence Day” – one with Will Smith’s character as the centerpiece and one without him at all.

The reason was that Smith was undecided about reprising his role of Captain Steven Hiller. That’s no longer the case though as Smith has now reportedly informed the studio that he won’t be joining the sequel after all.

Emmerich and Devlin wrote the first drafts with “Amazing Spider-Man” scribe James Vanderbilt working on the subsequent versions of what are essentially two separate scripts.

Smith had reportedly been back and forth before on whether to make the movie, but now is “pretty much decided”. A final conversation with Emmerich has yet to take place though.

Even without Smith, Fox is keen to get the filming ready and into cinemas in time for the 20th anniversary of the original – July 4th 2016.
