Will Smith is in negotiations to star in Ang Lee’s clone thriller “Gemini Man” for Skydance Pictures and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
The story follows an aging assassin who, in his attempts to leave the business, finds himself in the ultimate battle – up against his own clone who is twenty-five years younger than him and at the peak of his abilities.
Smith turns 49 this year, which would put him up against his early-to-mid 20-something self. Effectively it’s present day Will Smith vs. “Fresh Prince” & “Six Degrees of Separation”-era Will Smith.
Darren Lemke first pitched the project twenty years ago and the popular script has been floating around since, but it has widely been considered unfilmable for many years – short of casting two different actors for the lead role.
The advent of digital de-aging technology though demonstrates this can work with one actor in both roles. Lee came onboard the other week with the project suddenly gaining steam, but Smith’s scheduling still has to be worked out.
