Will Smith is reportedly attached to “King Richard,” a spec script by Zach Baylin that would have him starring as Richard Williams, father of tennis prodigies Venus and Serena Williams.
Richard Williams had no tennis background and overcame tremendous hardship, scepticism and his own troubled past to raise two of the game’s greatest players
He gave them tennis lessons on cracked public courts in Compton, reportedly after their father brawled with young toughs who weren’t fans of the sport and would not make way.
The Williams sisters went on to become two of the greatest female players in tennis history, with Serena clocking up twenty-three Grand Slam tournament wins.
Tim White and Trevor White will produce through their Star Thrower Entertainment company alongside Smith through his Overbrook Entertainment label. Smith will next be seen in Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” and Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man,” is currently filming “Bad Boys for Life,” and recently departed James Gunn’s in development “The Suicide Squad”.
