Wiest, Pena Join Eastwood’s “The Mule”

Dianne Wiest and Michael Pena are set to join “American Sniper” duo of director Clint Eastwood and actor Bradley Cooper in the new crime drama “The Mule” at Warner Bros. Pictures.

Eastwood is not only directing but also starring in the film, his first time on screen since 2012. He’ll play Earl Stone, a man in his 80s who is broke, alone and facing foreclosure of his business when he is offered a job that simply requires him to drive.

What he discovers is that he has just signed on as a drug courier for a Mexican cartel. He does the job so well he is assigned a handler, and he also comes on the radar of hard-charging DEA agent (Cooper).

Wiest will play Stone’s ex-wife, Pena plays an enforcer for the cartel. Laurence Fishburne, Alison Eastwood, Taissa Farmiga and Ignacio Serricchio have also joined the project which began filming today in Atlanta.

Nick Schenk (“Gran Torino”) wrote the script while Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas will produce.
