The long in the works film adaptation of the stage musical “Wicked” is remaining that way with show creator Stephen Schwartz confirming the film won’t arrive next year as planned.
Schwartz says the project is still very much in development and insists the film will happen, telling THR this week:
“I will tell you 100 percent there will be a movie of Wicked and it won’t be that far away, but it won’t be next year because we’re still writing. Pre-production hasn’t even begun but that could start in the not-too-distant future. That [December 2019 announced release date] was always a fake date. There wasn’t a prayer in hell.”
One of the longest running shows on Broadway, this alternate retelling of L. Frank Baum’s classic “The Wizard of Oz” follows two opposing witches from their first meeting to one’s transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West.
Stephen Daldry helms while Marc Platt, Jon B. Platt and David Stone will produce. Schwartz worked on the script which also boasts two new songs.
