Why “Thrones” Brought Two Characters Together

Whilst the early episodes of the fifth season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” seemed to be spinning their wheels at times, the same can’t be said for this past Sunday’s seventh episode which barrelled through numerous storylines from the books at record pace.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “GAME OF THRONES” SEASON 5 EPISODE 7

In fact, the recent episode featured a first meeting between two of the series’ principal characters – a meeting that has yet to take place in the books. Yes, Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen finally came face-to-face in a fighting pit. It was a surprise not just for TV only viewers but book readers as well.

Show runner David Benioff tells EW this pairing was one they most eagerly anticipated this season:

“We’re really excited to see these two characters we love so much finally set eyes on each other. Creatively it made sense to us, because we wanted it to happen. They’re two of the best characters of the show. To have them come so close together this season then have them not meet felt incredibly frustrating.

Also, we’re on a relatively fast pace. We don’t want to do a 10-year adaptation of the books, we don’t want to do a nine-year adaptation. We’re not going to spend four seasons in Meereen. It’s time for these two to get together.

It’s hard to come up with a more eloquent explanation, but this just felt right. [Varys] puts Tyrion’s mission out there [in the season premiere] and the mission ends in Meereen.”

This progress ahead of the books certainly lends credence to Benioff and fellow show runner Dan Weiss’ previous comments which suggests the series will conclude at the end of the seventh season. Asked if he’s worried about upsetting the fans of the books, Benioff says:

“There will always be some fans who will think it’s blasphemy . But we can’t not do something because we’re afraid of the reaction. I like to think we’ve always done what’s in the best interest of the show and we hope most people agree.”

With the loss of Ser Barristan a few episodes ago, could this mean Tyrion is being setup as Dany’s new advisor? We’ll find out this Sunday with the season still having a full three episodes to go.
