Mariah Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, Macy Gray, Janet Jackson and Kerry Washington are just some of the names that have joined the cast of Tyler Perry’s next project, the dramedy “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf” reports Black Voices.
The project is an adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s 1975 play which was a series of twenty poems performed through a cast of nameless women, each known only by a color: “Lady in Yellow”, “Lady in Purple”, etc.. The poems deal with love, abandonment, rape, domestic violence and abortion.
The feature film version will likely be a female ensemble drama that will craft a multiple storyline narrative using many of the poems for key scenes and themes.
Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett also star in the project which begins shooting in June in New York City and has already set a January 14th 2011 release date. Perry will write, direct and produce the film.
