One of the big secrets of Gareth Edwards’ “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” up until this point has been the role that Forest Whitaker is playing.
As part of an EW cover story earlier today, it was revealed that his name is a part of pre-existing “Star Wars” lore and is one fans would recognise. Well now it has been revealed officially by Lucasfilm and yes, you will have heard of him – that is only if you watch the tie-in animated series.
Whitaker is playing Saw Gerrera who was first seen in the fifth season of “The Clone Wars” animated series when he was a young man on the planet Onderon. He conducted guerilla combat against the droid army of Separatists who took over his world, and fought alongside Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The events of ‘Rogue One’ take place over two decades after those in “The Clone Wars” so obviously Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera is more battle-hardened with the years. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says: “Consider him kind of a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists. He’s on the fringe of the Rebel Alliance. Even [they] are a little concerned about him… he’s off on his own.”
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opens in December.
