WGN America has cancelled its redneck survivalists drama” Outsiders” after two seasons. The move is a surprise as it’s currently WGN’s top-rated original – averaging 2 million viewers across four airings on Tuesday night.
David Morse, Ryan Hurst, Gillian Alexy, Kyle Gallner, Christina Jackson, and Thomas M. Wright co-starred in the series about a Kentucky family who has lived off the grid on a mountain for over two centuries. Their way of life is threatened when a coal company decides to strip mine the mountain.
The move leaves the Underground Railroad drama “Underground” as the sole original series on the network, though a pilot based on the DC Comics title “Scalped” is in production. The network also developed “Salem” and “Manhattan,” but WGN America’s moves into original programming have proven expensive but with few awards and ratings to show for it.
