WGN America Cancels “Underground” Series

WGN America has officially cancelled “Underground” after two seasons, opting not to pick up the Underground Railroad-themed period drama for a third run.

The series chronicled the lives of both runaway slaves and abolitionists in the pre-Civil War United States struggling for freedom.

Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aisha Hinds, Aldis Hodge, Amirah Vann, Alano Miller, Christopher Meloni, and Jessica de Guow starred in the series. Despite good reviews, it’s more a victim of a new regime at WGN America which has effectively given up on scripted series – leading to the likes of the higher-rated “Outsiders” also being cancelled earlier this year.

Sony has been shopping the series to other networks in anticipation of the cancellation, but no deals have yet been made.
