Showrunners Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy along with actors Ed Harris, James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton and Jimmi Simpson all showed up at the PaleyFest panel for the HBO sci-fi/western drama “Westworld” over the weekend.
With the second season not debuting until 2018, there’s still various production issues to be sorted about before filming begins, and the producers haven’t set a date for the start of filming. One thing they plan to do this time, to avoid the issues they had with the first season, is to pen all ten episodes and have them done and set before production begins.
Joy and Nolan were otherwise tight lipped about the new season, the cast members confirming they know nothing about the episodes. One thing the showrunners were happy to speak about though are how those who follow Reddit threads and social media discussion of the series who may have been disappointed with the finale have only themselves to blame.
Joy said: “If you want to be surprised, you have to censor yourself from the internet,” while Nolan joked: “Reddit has already figured out the third episode twist and we’re changing that one out!.”
They also spoke about one of the finale’s big moments – Maeve (Thandie Newton) and her decision to leave the train of her own free will:
“The way that we designed it and the way we shot it… that is really the first decision she’s ever made. For me, it’s a very emotional moment in the episode because you’re seeing the first free will.”
“Westworld” is currently available on HBO Go and HBO Now.
