West Side Story Has Set Several Roles

Seventeen-year-old newcomer Rachel Zegler has scored the lead role of Maria in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming remake of the iconic musical “West Side Story”.

Zegler will star opposite Ansel Elgort, who is portraying Jets co-founder Tony in the adaptation. Three other latino and latina actors have also been cast as key members of the Sharks: David Alvarez as Maria’s brother Bernardo, Ariana DeBose as Anita, and Josh Andres Rivera as Chino.

They join the previously announced Rita Moreno, who originally played Anita in the 1961 film and here plays Valentina, a reimagined version of Tony’s boss, Doc. Oscar-nominated screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner wrote the new script for the remake which is expected to begin filming in the Summer.
