The Weinstein Co. will produce and distribute a big-screen version of Rita Marley’s 2004 autobiography “No Woman No Cry: My Life With Bob Marley” reports the trades.
The tome chronicles her late husband, musician Bob Marley, from childhood through their tumultuous 15-year marriage which includes a failed assassination attempt and his death from cancer at age 36 in 1981.
Marley himself will be played by two actors, one portraying him at age 15 and another as an adult, with the option of the original songs, covers sung by an actor or a “Ray”-style blend of the two all possible for the soundtrack.
Rudy Langlais (“The Hurricane”) and Lizzie Borden (“Working Girls”) are handling the script, the later currently down in Jamaica completing it. Some of the filming will also take place there starting early next year.
A late 2009 release date is set – several months before Martin Scorsese’s authorized feature documentary.
