After a minor bidding war, The Weinstein Company has scored worldwide distribution rights to the untitled next film by “There Will Be Blood” and “Magnolia” director Paul Thomas Anderson reports Deadline.
Anderson has since overhauled the script with Philip Seymour Hoffman playing a man who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America.
In the process he creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls. Joaquin Phoenix plays a 20-something drifter who becomes his right-hand man.
Both Hoffman and Phoenix are locked, while Anderson is said to be interested in the likes of Madisen Beaty, Amy Adams, Lena Endre and Laura Dern for the key female roles. Megan Ellison is financing.
