Last week eyebrows were raised when the MPAA’s Classification and Rating Administration gave Derek Cianfrance’s upcoming marital drama “Blue Valentine” an NC-17 rating.
The story is a brutally honest and emotionally truthful portrayal of a couple (Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams) whose marriage is falling apart. The rating was related to a scene of drunken hotel-room sex, a scene that film festival critics who’ve seen the film claim isn’t explicit in terms of either nudity or content.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter say The Weinstein Co. will appeal the restrictive rating with a formal hearing to take place next month. The film itself is still on target for a platform release kicking off December 31st.
