Marc Webb has come on board to direct the upcoming film “This Above All” based on the true-life story of Megan Phelps-Roper.
Phelps-Roper was a former member of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church and granddaughter of its founder Fred Phelps. She grew up espousing the teachings of her family and church, famed for its hate speech against LGBT people and other religions and picketing military funerals with anti-gay signs.
Ongoing conversations with opponents over Twitter led Phelps-Roper to question her belief system and by 2012 she and her younger sister made the decision to leave – in the process being disowned by their family.
Nick Hornby will adapt the script from Adrian Chen’s 2015 article for The New Yorker and from Phelps-Roper’s upcoming memoir. Dawn Ostroff, Jeremy Steckler, Reese Witherspoon, Bruna Papandrea, Marc Webb and Bill Pohlad will produce.
