Wanted Director Remaking “Ben-Hur”

Russian filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov (“Wanted,” “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) is in talks to direct a new adaptation of “Ben-Hur” at MGM.

Keith Clarke (“The Way Back”) is penning the script based on Lew Wallace’s bestselling 1880 novel. The property was most famously adapted before into William Wyler’s 1959 feature starring Charlton Heston.

The studio is said to be keen on Bekmambetov’s vision which explores the original story’s themes of revenge and redemption. Sean Daniel and Joni Levin will produce.

The news comes as Bekmambetov exits the in-development historical drama “The Current War” at Film Rites.
