With “The Conjuring” sequel out this Friday, filmmaker James Wan has been doing some press interviews during which he’s talked about his upcoming gig at the helm of the “Aquaman” solo movie at Warner Bros. Pictures.
First up he tells UpRoxx that when originally offered the gig, he was actually offered a choice between “Aquaman” and “The Flash”. He chose the former because not only hadn’t the character been properly adapted before, but it allowed him to indulge in a world creation story which he’s been keen to do.
One element of that will be the villain, or should we say villains as Wan suggests to CinemaBlend that there may be more than one here:
“I gotta say, one thing I love about the Aquaman world is all the really different, really interesting characters. They are interesting characters, including the villains – I’m not going to tell you which villains I’m going to play with! [laughs] But they’re super cool. They’re very larger than life, but they’re unique.”
Notable “Aquaman” villains include Black Manta, Ocean Master, The Dead King, Siren, The Thirst, The Trench, Fisherman, Scavenger and Charybdis. Wan also spoke about the current behind-the-scenes shakeups at Warner Bros. Pictures, saying he’s not seeing much of it at all:
“To be honest, it’s not as dramatic as the press is making it out to be – from what I’m seeing. And right now I’m seeing everything as more an outsider looking into this box. So from that perspective, it’s really cool that it’s not crazy, crazy dramatic.”
“Aquaman” is currently targeting a July 2018 release.
