The fifth season premiere of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” has broken one of the last records there is to break. Sunday night’s broadcast pulled in 17.3 million viewers in Live+Same Day ratings, making it the highest rated show in cable television history.
It beats previous record holder, “High School Musical 2,” which nabbed 17.2 million viewers in 2007 and has held onto the title of highest-rated live/same day non-sports telecast in cable history ever since.
‘Dead’ continues to grow, its number up from 16.1 million Live+Same Day ratings for the fourth season premiere. That episode went on to 21.1 million total viewers, the fifth season premiere is expected to top 22 million.
The show also dominated social media with a total of 1.32 million tweets – the highest total for a 2014 drama premiere.
