The third season of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” premiered on Sunday night and proved a staggering ratings success. So much so it is not only the show’s most-watched episode thus far, but the biggest telecast for any drama series in basic cable history.
Approximately 10.9 million viewers tuned in for the initial 9 o’clock telecast, while repeats over the next few hours brought that total up to 15.2 million for the night. Its key demo rating of 5.8 was better than many of the broadcast shows for the night including “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Modern Family.
The number comes on top of the fact that approximately 14 million DISH customers were unable to access the show due to a months-long fight the cable provider is currently engaged in with AMC. The series also had stiff competition against the likes of Sunday Night Football, “Revenge,” “The Good Wife,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “Dexter” in the same hour.
