Walking Dead Daryl Arc Talk, New Promo

One story that drew a bit of attention the other week was a quote from “The Walking Dead” comic creator Robert Kirkman. Talking about AMC’s TV series adaptation of his work on which he’s a producer, Kirkman let slip that fan favorite and very reserved character Daryl Dixon (who isn’t in the comics) might turn out to be gay.

This week, showrunner Scott M. Gimple spoke with TV Line about the new season and was immediately asked by the outlet about the quotes from Kirkman. Gimple confirms that Daryl’s sexuality won’t be addressed this year, but he’s glad the speculation and interest exists:

“We know all sorts of things about the characters that we haven’t revealed. [But] we’re not holding back information on Daryl’s sexuality as any sort of big reveal. The fact that there’s still a question as to what Daryl’s orientation is in Season 5 absolutely speaks to Daryl’s character; he is a very guarded, very closed-off individual in a lot of ways.

We have been able to see him ever so slowly open up and show the other characters aspect by aspect as to what makes him tick. That’s been a very satisfying journey for all of us on the creative side to portray. [And] he’s still on that journey. This is a character who is going to continue to grow closer to the other characters and let his guard down, and let them see just who he is, in every way.”

Gimple says there are plans in place to introduce a male gay character to the series but wouldn’t reveal when exactly that will be. In that case though it’s likely to be one of the already established gay characters from the comics such as Aaron or the more recently added Jesus.
