The smart dramas of the 1970s gave way to the hyper masculinity of the action films of the 1980s, explosive blockbusters dominated by muscular men without much depth who blasted pretty much everything in sight.
Midway through, James Cameron came in and changed the game with “Aliens” – a film that took the ‘Final Girl’ style character Ripley from Ridley Scott’s “Alien” and added more depth with the inclusion of a motherhood theme.
The result was unique – a film that offered a strong female character that didn’t lose her femininity and that had a serious and compelling emotional arc. She was the heart in a film where almost every other character was the posturing supermacho type, including the other women.
