Amongst the two dozen or so upcoming movies over the next few years based on comic books, one of the most interesting is David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” film. A big reason for that appeal is not just the concept, but the characters including government agent Amanda Waller.
Waller is a fascinating creation, a tough as nails government agent and pragmatist who cares about getting the job done no matter the political and moral implications. Several strong actresses have played her including Pam Grier, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Angela Bassett, and still the best to date – C.C.H. Pounder.
The casting of beloved actress Viola Davis as Waller the other week though is an excellent choice. Davis herself tells Nerd Report that scheduling around her “How to Get Away with Murder” series commitments are still being sorted out, but she’s very excited about the character:
“I’m fascinated by her. I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”
Shooting on the “Suicide Squad” film begins in April in Toronto.
