Vinterberg, Mulligan Follow The “Crowd”

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg (“The Hunt,” “The Celebration”) is planning a film adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic 1874 novel “Far From The Madding Crowd” at DNA Films, Fox Searchlight and BBC Films reports The Wrap.

The story follows Bathsheba Everdene and her three suitors – the shepherd Gabriel Oak, the soldier Sergeant Troy, and the farm owner William Boldwood. Producers are reportedly pursuing Carey Mulligan for the lead role.

“Starter for Ten” author and “Bridget Jones Baby” screenplay writer David Nicholls is set to adapt the novel. Nicholls’ recent work includes adaptations of Hardy’s “Tess of the D’Urbervilles” for the BBC and Mike Nichols’ “Great Expectations” opening later this year.

‘Madding Crowd’ has been adapted for the screen numerous times before both directly, such as the 1967 film with Julie Christie, and indirectly such as 2010’s rom-com “Tamara Drewe”.
