VFX: “Blade Runner 2049” Replicant Recreation

More convincing than the Grand Moff Tarkin & Leia recreations in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” but still not quite ‘there’ yet, Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” included the brief return of the replicant Rachel with the help of modern CG.

A combination of a performance double on set, facial scans of actress Sean Young and the original Ridley Scott film for reference, lead to the creation of a completely CG double whose head was then pasted on over the double’s in the scenes.

One of the best digital doubles put to film yet, The Moving Picture Company (MPC) visual effects studio released an effects video the other week showing how it was done. The real impressive part of the video though is the recreation of scenes from the original “Blade Runner” but entirely in CG with two being compared side-by-side. The illusion is nearly flawless.

“Blade Runner 2049” is now out on Digital HD.
