Verbinski Drops “Pirates 4” For “Bioshock”

“Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy director Gore Verbinski will not helm the upcoming fourth installment in the series according to Variety.

Verbinski has informed ‘Pirates’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer of the news, and instead will focus on other projects. Chief amongst these is the Universal Pictures adaptation of the bestselling video game “Bioshock” which John Logan scripted as is expected to Verbinski’s next feature.

A fourth ‘Pirates’ film is expected to go into production next year with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow. The project has yet to be greenlit however and Verbinski’s departure may affect that schedule.

Verbinski and Depp will still work together on Paramount’s CG-animated film “Rango” in which Depp voices the title character. That film opens March 2011.
