Sony Pictures has reportedly pulled in $10 million for “Venom” in Thursday night previews alone. That marks the best Thursday night preview haul in October of all-time. It also puts the Marvel film on track for the sizeable $55-65 million projections that the studio has been suggesting for several weeks.
How high and how long it will last remains questionable. Rotten Tomatoes has the film at a mere 31% with critics, while audience votes on the same site clock in at 88% – a large disconnect.
Additionally, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s latest remake of “A Star is Born” made $3.2 million on Thursday night. Combined with a further $1.35 million in Tuesday and Wednesday previews bringing it to around $4.6 million in pre-opening weekend previews. That film is on track for a $32-35 million opening and could well go higher judging by the rave reviews.
