Paramount TV and CMT are teaming up for a TV series remake of the 1999 high school football movie “Varsity Blues”.
W. Peter Iliff, who penned the original film, will develop the new take with Paramount TV who will produce. CMT has ordered a script for the project and should they approve it could go on to become a series quickly.
“Dawson’s Creek” star James Van Der Beek, the late Paul Walker, Amy Smart, Scott Caan, Ali Larter and Jon Voight all starred in the original about a back-up Texas quarterback who takes over a team of misfits and stands up against an abusive coach and overbearing football-obsessed town. It grossed $54.3 million on a budget of $16 million.
The order comes as CMT makes a big push into scripted programming which includes rescuing ABC’s “Nashville” from cancellation.
