The worst kept secret in the universe has been confirmed – Darth Vader will appear in Gareth Edwards’ upcoming prequel spin-off “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”.
The film’s writer Anthony Breznican made an appearance on “Good Morning America” to promote the upcoming Entertainment Weekly cover story which hits newsstands later this week. During the interview he confirmed that though Vader will show up, he won’t be the primary threat:
“Darth Vader kind of looms large over the plot even when he’s not necessarily on screen because the new villain played by Ben Mendleson, Director Krennic, [is] trying to fulfill the wishes of the Emperor and he’s got kinda Vader looming in the background over his shoulder, making sure that he gets the job done.”
Amongst other revelations in the EW story, the magazine confirms Mads Mikkelsen’s comment in April in which he said he plays Galen Erso, the father of Felicia Jones’ Jyn Erso and a scientist sought by both the Empire and Rebellion. Also the Imperial Walkers seen in the trailer are called AT-ACTs, a taller and slimmer modified versions of AT-ATs which are used for shipping cargo instead of combat.
Diego Luna’s Captain Cassian Andor is a by-the-book Rebel intelligence officer brought in to keep an eye on the volatile Erso. Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe is a formidable blind warrior whose devotion to the Jedi ways and spirituality allows him to overcome his disability. Jiang Wen’s Baze Malbus is a much more practical man, but Chirrut’s best friend.
Riz Ahmed’s Bodhi Rook is the hot-headed lead pilot of the Rebel squad. Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO is a towering, powerful security droid and “the antithesis of C-3PO.” Ben Mendelsohn’s Director Orson Krennic is an “ambitious Imperial apparatchik” who plans to get in the good books of the Emperor whilst avoiding his enforcer Darth Vader.
A big new revelation will reportedly be released each day over the next few days to promote the issue. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be released December 16th.
