Universal Pictures has optioned the film rights to “Wicked” author Gregory Maguire’s upcoming fantasy book “Egg and Spoon”. Marc Platt, who produced the “Wicked” Broadway show, will produce the ‘Egg’ film.
The story follows a young girl who lives with her sick mother in the impoverished Russian countryside. A train arrives, carrying untold wealth and a noble family which includes a girl of her age.
The two girls’ lives collide, setting a grand adventure – involving mistaken identity and a prince traveling incognito – in motion. The story also includes the famed Russian folklore witch Baba Yaga.
Maguire is known for penning revisionist takes of children’s fairytales, with his reinvention of L. Frank Baum’s “Oz” series leading to the Broadway musical which is now celebrating its tenth year. Stephen Daldry remains attached to direct the long gestating film adaptation at Universal.
