Universal Pictures and Dino De Laurentiis Co. are planning a new adaptation of the Stephen King novel “Firestarter” reports Variety.
The book centers on a young girl cursed with the gift of pyrokinesis – the ability to set things on fire using only her mind. Mark L. Smith is penning a script that will be “loosely based” on the book, and will reinvent the main character to have “more edge”.
Drew Barrymore stared as the girl in a previous film adaptation in 1984. Universal hopes to make this the first of a potential franchise and production hopes to kick off sometime next year.
