Universal Pictures has picked up the rights to “News of the World,” the latest project from “Captain Phillips” duo Tom Hanks and Paul Greengrass.
Greengrass is still in talks to direct with Hanks serving as star and producer for the film which was first set up at Fox 2000. Set in the aftermath of the Civil War, the story tells of a widowed news reader who travels across Texas announcing the news of the times.
He sets out to deliver a young orphan girl, whose parents were killed by a Native American tribe who then raised her as their own, to her family in San Antonio. The pair travels 400 miles through dangerous terrain, slowly developing a bond that will be tested when he has to give her up to abusive relatives.
Gary Goetzman and Gail Mutrux will also produce.
