A24 is effectively dumping its Andrew Garfield-led crime thriller “Under the Silver Lake,” the film will be headed to VOD on April 22nd – just three days after its limited theatrical release in Los Angeles and New York.
The film hails from “It Follows” director David Robert Mitchell and first screened at the Cannes Film Festival last year to a mixed response. The original June 22nd 2018 release was pushed back to December and then April 19th in just two cinemas. Also not helping the film’s case was that a Blu-ray rip leaked onto pirate networks in December.
Garfield plays a disenchanted 33-year-old who discovers a mysterious woman, Sarah (Riley Keough), frolicking in his East L.A. apartment’s swimming pool. When she vanishes, Sam embarks on a surreal quest across the city to decode the secret behind her disappearance, leading him into the murkiest depths of mystery, scandal, and conspiracy in the City of Angels.
He crosses paths with dog killers, aspiring actors, glitter-pop groups, nightlife personalities, It girls, memorabilia hoarders, masked seductresses, homeless gurus, reclusive songwriters, sex workers, wealthy socialites, topless neighbours, and shadowy billionaires floating above (and underneath) it all. Topher Grace, Zosia Mamet, Jimmi Simpson and Luke Baines also star.
Amazon gets it on-demand first on the 22nd while Google Play, iTunes, Fandango Now and Vudu will release it on April 23rd.
