One of Studio Ghibli’s quietest films, Tomomi Mochizuki’s “Ocean Waves,” is set to receive a brand new 4K restoration and theatrical release for the first time in the United States next week. Check out the new trailer release below.
Rarely seen outside of Japan, ‘Waves’ was originally made for Japanese TV and is described as a subtle, poignant and wonderfully detailed story of adolescence and teenage isolation.
Taku and his best friend Yutaka are headed back to school for what looks like another uneventful year. But they soon find their friendship tested by the arrival of Rikako, a beautiful new transfer student from Tokyo. When Taku joins Rikako on a trip to Tokyo, the school erupts with rumors, and the three friends are forced to come to terms with their changing relationships.
U.S. distributor GKIDS will screen the film from December 28th in New York City. This likely means a new Blu-ray release will follow sometime next year.
