Tyler Perry is set to star in a biopic of pioneering African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux which is in development at Sony Pictures TV, Storyline Entertainment and HBO.
Charles Murray (“Sons of Anarchy,” “Roots”) is penning the script based on film historian Patrick McGilligan’s 2007 biography about novelist turned director Micheaux.
Micheaux is believed to have helmed more than forty features between 1919 and 1948, working outside the confines of Hollywood in the face of discrimination against an African-American entrepreneur. His films largely featured all-black casts and were an effort to counter racial stereotypes with humanistic portrayals of black life.
Perry is set to executive produce alongside Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, but doesn’t intend to direct.
